2004 SPINIFEX GRENACHE – IT’S A BIG ‘UN (AND A GOOD 'UN)

The 2004 Spinifex Grenache is an opulent wine for those with a hedonistic bent. Weighing in at 15.5%, it is a rich, flamboyant wine, unashamedly Barossan wine. Yet, as with most wines tended by the intelligent hands of Peter Schell, it is a lot more than just a run of the mill Barossa Grenache.

Deep plum red in colour, the wine literally leaps from the glass; fruit of the forest compote, high quality dark chocolate and exotic spices vie for attention. These characters flow through to the palate that is at one rich, complex and well balanced. Although now seven years post vintage, there’s a lot of life left in this wine, and sufficient fruit intensity and structure to suggest that it could develop for a further several years, becoming more savoury in that time.

If you like your wines pretty and pert, then this probably isn’t for you, but those that don’t mind an odd touch of bold flamboyance will be well and truly indulged.

Tasting Note:
Deep plum red. Brooding nose of liqueur plums, cherries and strawberries; dark chocolate. Rich and full bodied, this is a hedonistic and indulgent wine, uber concentrated fruit of the forest compote married with high quality dark chocolate. Plus and supple, relatively low acidity. There’s plenty of life left in this Grenache, which should become more dry and savoury with additional bottle age. Although over 15% alcohol, the wine is well balanced, and the high alcohol shouldn't deter those accustomed to Grenache from the Southern Rhone.
Score: 17.5/20
