MORNINGTON PINOT HITS THE SPOT

Some years back, finding decent quality Australian Pinot Noir for a reasonable price was challenge. Thankfully, things have progressed. As our vignerons spend more time with the most capricious of grape varieties, so does their understanding of how to fashion elegant and understated wine improve.

Moorooduc Estate is one of the Mornington Peninsula’s leading lights, highly rated for both its Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. The credo that any producer is only as good as its second label certainly rings true here, as Moorooduc’s Devil Bend Creek label delivers both value and quality in spades.

Whilst certainly not from Burgundy, the 2010 Moorooduc Estate Devil Bend Creek possesses excellent depth of savoury fruit, married with judicious oak. The result is a food friendly and eminently drinkable Pinot Noir that should improve in bottle for 5-6 years. At under $25 per bottle, it represents excellent value for money.

2010 DEVIL BEND CREEK PINOT NOIR

Producer: Moorooduc Estate
Variety: Pinot Noir
Vintage: 2010
Region: Mornington Peninsula, Victoria
ABV: 14%
Closure: Screw cap
Format: 750ml
Retail price: $24.99
Date tasted: 15 January 2012

Tasting Note:
Fruit driven bouquet of rhubarb, cherries and plums. Dry, medium bodied, elegant fruit driven palate, characters much the same as the nose. Good depth of fruit, not jammy or sweet. An Australian Pinot Noir with depth and true varietal character. What it lacks for in structure, it makes up for in sheer drinkability at a modest pricepoint. Good value for money.
Score: 16.5/20
