2008 SPINIFEX LOLA - L-O-L-A.....LOLA

Talented Kiwi Peter Schell has put together this fascinating field blend of Semillon 48%, Marsanne 32%, Ugni Blanc 10%, Vermentino 5% and Viognier 5%. Stylistically, it can perhaps best be compared to the various white blends of southern France, a part of the world from which Peter draws some of his winemaking inspiration.

Just like some of the southern French white blends it emulates, Spinifex Lola tastes a bit like a white Burgundy, but clearly isn’t. It is a food friendly wine, perhaps suited to richer dishes such as scallops and the like. If the 2008 is anything to go by, it is a wine that is capable of ageing in bottle (and improving) for a few years.

2008 LOLA
Producer: Spinifex Winery
Variety: Southern Rhone white blend
Vintage: 2008
Region: Barossa Valley, South Australia
ABV: 13.5%
Price: N/a
Closure: Screw cap
Format: 750ml
Date tasted: 5 October 2011

Tasting Note:
Bright and enticing nose of grapefruit pith, honeysuckle and green apples, slightly floral. Dry and medium bodied with an alluring silky texture that envelops the tongue. With creamy white peach and Granny Smith apple fruit, it has a slight Burgundian feel to it. This is a wine that is best suited to food. A couple of more years in the cellar would do no harm either.
Score: 16/20
